When something unexpected happens at home or in the neighbourhood, knowing what to do can make the moment feel more manageable.

At the Seniors’ Block Party hosted by Allkin Singapore, residents spent the morning learning practical first aid and CPR through simple, hands-on activities. HMI Institute was part of the event, engaging participants in familiar, everyday scenarios.

At the booth, residents tried identifying items from a first aid kit and practised bandaging an injured arm. These were situations they could easily imagine happening at home, which made the learning feel more approachable.

There was also an opportunity to try CPR on a training manikin. For many, it was their first time. Some were hesitant at first, but after a few attempts, they began to get a sense of the rhythm and pressure needed.

Learning simple steps does not mean having all the answers, but it can make it easier to stay calm and take the first step while waiting for help.

Bringing these sessions into community spaces allows people to learn in a way that feels practical, familiar, and easy to apply.

More than 80 participants joined our First Aid for the Elderly webinar to strengthen their readiness in emergencies. The session was highly engaging, with many participants asking questions and seeking advice on real-life scenarios.

Visitors to our booth were invited to test their skills in the CPR Challenge, putting life-saving techniques into practice and discovering how quickly and confidently they could respond in an emergency.

For a deeper understanding of ageing, participants also tried various activities simulating ageing. The activity offered a first-hand experience of the physical and sensory changes seniors face daily, fostering empathy and awareness for older adults in the community.

Through interactive activities, HMI Institute equips individuals with practical skills and insights that prepare them to care, respond, and make a difference in real-life situations. Every interaction reinforces the idea that readiness, empathy, and confidence go hand in hand when building a safer, more caring community.

Celebrating National Day goes beyond flags and parades. At Yishun’s Heartland Celebrations 2025, HMI Institute brought an interactive, hands-on experience to the community, encouraging participants to step into the role of a first responder and explore the challenges faced by seniors.

As Singapore came together to celebrate SG60, this initiative underscored the importance of being ready to care for one another when it matters most. Volunteers, many of whom supported the parade behind the scenes, left the training empowered to safeguard their fellow Singaporeans should urgent situations arise.

This training formed part of HMI Institute’s broader support for NDP 2025, which also included engaging volunteer networks and bringing outreach efforts to heartland celebrations. Each initiative was guided by our mission to care, educate and empower, and our belief that every Singaporean has a role to play in building a prepared and compassionate society.

Since 2002, HMI Institute has remained committed to strengthening community readiness through training and education. As we mark SG60 together, we continue to take steps towards a future where lifesaving knowledge and confidence are shared widely across the community.

In the lead-up to the National Day Parade (NDP) 2025, HMI Institute supported the NDP Committee to strengthen emergency preparedness among volunteers. More than 150 individuals are equipped with CPR and AED training, gaining the confidence and skills to act in an emergency.

Visitors discovered a variety of courses designed to equip them with practical skills for caring confidently, whether at home or in clinical settings. From first aid and caregiving to health coaching and venepuncture, each pathway offers hands-on learning that prepares individuals to respond with competence and compassion.

Many also joined our CPR demonstration, experiencing first-hand how life-saving techniques taught in our courses can be applied in real-world emergencies. The session built technical know-how and reinforced the importance of acting quickly and calmly when it matters most.

Events like these create opportunities for people from all walks of life to take their first step towards growing skills and confidence in care.

Building skills that make a difference was the focus at this year’s SkillsFuture Festival @ North West.  In collaboration with SkillsFuture Singapore, Lifelong Learning Institute, and North West Community Development Council, HMI Institute showcased how healthcare and community care training can open doors to meaningful roles and everyday impact.

At HMI Institute’s booth, visitors explored a wide range of upskilling opportunities in healthcare and community care. These included the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) for those seeking a mid-career switch, as well as courses in caregiving, first aid, and health coaching. Each training pathway is designed to equip individuals with the confidence and competence to care, whether at home or in clinical settings.

Workshops and talks held during the event offered hands-on learning and practical takeaways. Attendees discovered how to assist seniors safely, gained an understanding of ageing-related changes, practised CPR techniques, and explored the different training options available under SCTP.

By creating spaces where learning is both practical and meaningful, we empower more individuals to step forward as caregivers in their own communities. Whether supporting a loved one at home or serving in a professional role, every skill learned strengthens the network of care around us.

From caregivers to career switchers, participants at the SkillsFuture Festival Care Economy Jobs and Skills Fair walked away with new skills, fresh insights, and the inspiration to begin their journey in the care economy. In collaboration with SkillsFuture Singapore, Lifelong Learning Institute, and e2i, HMI Institute shared a range of upskilling options for those looking to care with confidence.

This year, backstage at Suntec City Convention Centre, HMI Institute’s trainers engaged with more than 5,000 show performers during their rehearsal breaks, introducing essential first aid skills they could use to help someone in distress.

Participants learned practical techniques such as managing upper limb fractures using a triangular bandage, controlling bleeding with a crepe bandage, and responding to adult choking emergencies.

Skills like these can have a big impact when used in the right moment. Through interactive demonstrations, performers had the chance to practise each technique, building both confidence and readiness to step in when needed.

Beyond learning techniques, the session encouraged performers to see themselves as potential first responders who can make a difference in an emergency. By weaving life-saving know-how into everyday moments, we empower more Singaporeans to act with care in real-life situations.

At HMI Institute, the mission goes beyond training. As the social enterprise arm of HMI Medical, we remain committed to building a healthier, more prepared, and more compassionate society. Every outreach effort, big or small, brings us closer to that mission.

In line with SG60 celebrations and Singapore’s ongoing national health priorities, efforts are underway to ensure that more people are equipped to respond during moments that matter.

Recently, HMI Institute conducted a training session for 100 uniformed personnel who will be supporting this year’s National Day Parade (NDP). Many of them will be guiding and assisting diverse groups of spectators, including schoolchildren and SPED participants, along the event route.

The session focused on building both practical and interpersonal readiness. Participants learned how to identify common emergencies affecting vulnerable groups, adapt first aid techniques with care, and respond calmly under pressure. The training also encouraged them to reflect on how compassion and communication can make a meaningful difference in moments of crisis.

By fostering this awareness, the session contributed to ongoing efforts to create a more thoughtful and inclusive NDP experience where the needs of all individuals, including those who are more vulnerable, are considered and respected.

At HMI Institute, we believe that preparedness begins with empathy. Through initiatives like this, we continue to strengthen a network of community first responders who are ready to act with care, confidence, and understandingon National Day and beyond.

As Singapore prepares to celebrate National Day at the Padang, behind the scenes, thoughtful steps are being taken to ensure that everyone, from young children to seniors and individuals with special needs, can take part safely and meaningfully.

This outreach is part of our commitment to engaging students early and sparking awareness of healthcare and community care. By starting these conversations at a younger age, we hope to cultivate empathy, social responsibility, and an understanding of how care plays a vital role in society.

Beyond the skills practice, the experience encouraged students to reflect on ageing as a shared social responsibility. By stepping into the shoes of older adults, they began to understand how everyday actions such as offering help or showing patience can contribute to a more age-inclusive community.

What stood out most were their thoughtful questionsabout skills-based volunteerism, roles in community care, and how they could contribute meaningfully even as students. Their curiosity and compassion speak volumes about the potential of youth to drive change.

At HMI Institute, we believe that nurturing care and confidence starts early. By engaging the youths in meaningful, hands-on learning, we hope to foster a generation ready to lead with empathy and make a difference in their communities.



What does it mean to respond with care? 

At Nanyang Girls’ High School’s Career Fair, students explored this question through hands-on CPR training and ageing empathy simulations. These activities introduced them to basic emergency response skills and gave them insight into the physical and sensory challenges faced by seniors.

The learning journey aimed to inspire individuals considering a career switch by offering a closer look into the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) and the real-world impact of a role in care.

To bring these possibilities to life, we invited SCTP alumni back to share their journeys. Each story is a powerful example of resilience and transformation. Hearing directly from those who have made the leap helps participants better understand the challenges and rewards of a mid-career transition and encourages them to take the first step with confidence.

Participants also toured HMI Institute’s facilities, including our Simulation Labs, to experience firsthand how hands-on training prepares learners to step into real-world care settings.

Among the speakers was Mr Bony Sim, who left a 20-year career as an embalmer at age 58 to become a Healthcare Assistant. He now applies his skills daily, both at work and while caring for his elderly mother, and is working toward his dream of becoming an Enrolled Nurse.

Mr Chia, another SCTP graduate, shared how the programme gave him both skills and the support to overcome self-doubt . He now supports elderly patients as a Therapy Assistant at Singapore General Hospital, a role he secured through HMI Institute’s Job Fair.

These stories are reminders that career transitions are not just about new job titles. They’re about finding purpose, building confidence, and discovering the ability to care for others in meaningful ways.

At HMI Institute, we continue to support mid-career professionals with accessible, hands-on training that opens doors to new beginnings in healthcare where every skill learned can change a life, including your own.

What does it take to start a new chapter in your 40s, 50s or beyond? At a Learning Journey co-hosted with Lifelong Learning Institute and North West CDC, mid-career participants discovered how healthcare can offer both job security and personal fulfilment.

The session was tailored for tenants working in the building, providing them with essential first aid skills that can be applied in the workplace, at home, or within the community. By equipping them with life-saving knowledge, the initiative supports the broader goal of fostering a safer and healthier work environment.

From managing burns and bleeding to responding to seizures, the session offered practical knowledge grounded in real-world scenarios. Participants also practised CPR and techniques for managing choking, gaining both competence and confidence.

One of the highlights was the ageing simulation suit, which gave participants a glimpse into the physical and sensory challenges older adults often face, such as reduced mobility, joint stiffness, and vision or hearing changes.

These hands-on experiences opened the door to deeper conversations about ageing, caregiving, and inclusion. Many walked away with a new perspective: that small, thoughtful acts, like offering a seat, speaking patiently, or noticing signs of struggle, can make a big difference in how supported seniors feel in everyday life.

Safety plays a big part in creating a memorable National Day Parade (NDP) experience. Ahead of this year’s celebration at the Padang, HMI Institute trained 200 youth volunteers from Heartware Network in essential emergency response skills.

Migrant workers are an important part of Singapore’s community and growth. Many receive care at Starmed Occupational Health Clinic, part of HMI Medical Centre. This CPR training session bridged health education with practical workplace safety, going beyond skill-building to instil confidence in protecting one another, both at work and at home.

How do we build safer communities that look out for one another? By equipping every individual with essential first responder skills. Recently, HMI Institute partnered with HMI Medical Centre to provide CPR awareness training to over 180 migrant workers, empowering them with the confidence to respond effectively in emergencies.

We were honoured to welcome Dr. Lim Wee Kiak, Adviser to Canberra GRO, and Mr. Ng Shi Xuan, Second Adviser to Sembawang GRO, to our booth, where they actively participated in our experiential activities. These activities, including CPR demonstrations and the ageing simulation suit, were designed to bring awareness to both the importance of first responder skills and the daily challenges faced by seniors.

At our booth, community members took part in CPR demonstrations, learning practical techniques to respond confidently and effectively in emergencies. They also engaged in discussions about first responder skills and the steps they can take to be better prepared. These hands-on experiences allowed participants to gain the confidence they need to make informed decisions and take action during critical moments.

The highlight of the event was the ageing simulation suit, which allowed participants to experience the mobility and sensory challenges that seniors face daily. It was inspiring to see attendees actively engaging with the simulation, gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to care for the elderly. This experience aligned perfectly with our mission to foster a community that is not only well-prepared for emergencies but also empathetic and proactive in its caregiving efforts.

Our talk on “Responding to Elderly Emergencies” was another significant part of the event. Attendees learned to identify warning signs and respond appropriately to seniors in need. Through these sessions, we reinforced our vision to create a supportive, resilient community where everyone is equipped to care for and support their loved ones, especially the elderly.

 HMI Institute, Singapore Pools (Private) Limited, and ITE College Central have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to launch a collaborative effort aimed at elevating caregiving education and outreach. This partnership envisions creating educational content for Carebuddy.co, an online platform powered by HMI Institute, to provide the high-touch online learning and resources needed to uplift and elevate standards of caregiving in the home environment.
